Embrace the Joy of Christmas with the Iconic Christmas Tree of DC

Washington, D.C. is known globally for its iconic monuments and memorials, and during the holiday season, it’s home to one of the country’s grandest and most beloved Christmas Trees. Every year the Washington D.C. Christmas Tree is lit up in a spectacular display of holiday cheer, giving locals and visitors alike a chance to embrace the joy of Christmas in the nation’s capital.

Christmas Tree DC is more than just a pretty tree – it’s an annual tradition that symbolizes the start of the holiday season. As the official Christmas Tree of the nation’s capital, this tree is carefully selected each year to represent the spirit of the holidays to millions of people from around the world who visit the city during this special time of year.

A Longstanding Tradition

The tradition of lighting up the Washington D.C. Christmas Tree began back in 1923 when then-President Calvin Coolidge lit up a small evergreen tree on the White House Ellipse. Since then, the tradition has grown into a much larger event, with the Christmas Tree now displayed at the President’s Park between the White House and the Washington Monument. The tree is typically lit the day after Thanksgiving, in what has become a beloved holiday tradition for the people of D.C.

The Selection Process

Every year, the selection process for the Christmas Tree of D.C. begins several months before the holiday season. The National Park Service works with local Christmas Tree growers to find the perfect tree to represent D.C. This is no easy task, as the tree must be strong and healthy enough to withstand the winter weather, while also being tall enough (at least 20 feet) to make an impressive statement. After the tree is chosen, it is cut down and transported to the President’s Park, where it is put up with great care and precision.

The Annual Lighting Ceremony

Once the tree is in place, the White House puts on the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. This event is usually held the first week of December, and features performances by local choirs and musical acts, as well as appearances by members of the U.S. military. At the end of the night, the President officially lights up the tree in a dazzling display of lights and Christmas cheer.

Enjoy the Holiday Season at Christmas Tree D.C.

Whether you’re a visitor to D.C. or a local resident, the annual Christmas Tree lighting ceremony is a must-see event. It’s a chance to celebrate the start of the holiday season with friends, family, and thousands of others, all gathering to marvel at the majestic tree and its stunning display of lights. So come to the President’s Park and join in the Christmas festivities – the Christmas Tree of D.C. is calling!
