A Joyful Christmas of 1966 in the U.K

The year 1966 was a special one for the United Kingdom as it was the first time that the country celebrated Christmas. The UK had undergone several years of upheaval and change since the end of World War II, but the Christmas season provided a welcome respite for the British people. From the traditional carol singing to the festivities at the local pubs, Christmas in the UK was truly a special time of joy and celebration.

The Christmas of 1966 in the UK was also marked by a flurry of activity and a festive atmosphere. The holiday season saw the launch of the BBC’s popular TV series ‘Doctor Who’ and also the release of the classic Beatles’ album ‘Revolver’. Queen Elizabeth II delivered her first Christmas speech to the nation and the New Year was welcomed with a bang across the country.

Caroling and Celebrations

Christmas in the UK was traditionally celebrated with carol singing. During the mid-1960s, caroling took place throughout towns and villages, where children would gather around the Christmas tree to sing the traditional songs of the season. People would typically give each other small gifts as a token of appreciation and often decorate their homes and gardens with festive decorations.

For adults, Christmas celebrations typically involved a visit to the local pub, where a warm fire was lit and food and drinks were shared among friends and family. In the evening, people would usually gather around the fireplace to tell stories and sing carols. This was the perfect way to end a day of celebrations and share the festive spirit of the season.

Musical Offerings

The Christmas season of 1966 was also marked by a number of musical offerings. The iconic Beatles scored a major hit with their classic album ‘Revolver’, while the Bee Gees released their debut single ‘New York Mining Disaster 1941’. The Rolling Stones also released their single ‘Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?’, which became one of the most popular songs of the Christmas season.

The music of the season was brought to life on the BBC TV series ‘Doctor Who’, which was launched in December of 1966. The show's iconic theme tune, composed by Ron Grainer, was an instant hit and remains as popular today as it was back then.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Speech

Queen Elizabeth II held special significance during the festive season of 1966 as it was the first time that she delivered her Christmas speech to the nation. The speech, which was broadcast from the library of Buckingham Palace, highlighted the importance of love and friendship during the holiday season. It was a heart-warming speech that resonated with people across the country.

In addition to the speech, Queen Elizabeth II also released a postage stamp to commemorate the festive season. The stamp depicted a group of carolers dressed in traditional costumes, and was a reminder of the festive spirit that was so prevalent throughout the country during the Christmas of 1966.

Celebrating the New Year

The Christmas of 1966 was brought to a close with a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration. Throughout the country fireworks were set off in an attempt to bring in the New Year with a bang. People also gathered in the streets to sing Auld Lang Syne and take part in traditional New Year’s Eve activities.

As the clock struck midnight, people across the country toasted the new year and celebrated the festive season with a sense of hope and optimism. The Christmas of 1966 was a special one for the UK and it remains a fond memory for many across the nation.
